India launches cheap Android tablet

The Android 2.2-based tablet, called Aakash, is a 7-inch device that was first revealed last year by India’sTelecoms and Education Minister Kapil Sibal.

The made-in-India tablet is reportedly powered by a Conexant Systems processor rated at 660MHz, comes with 2GB of internal storage and uses a resistive LCD display instead of a capacitive touchscreen. It has a full-sized USB port and the battery is rated at a meager 3 hours. Currently, it only supports Wi-Fi,  though future versions may have a 3G modem.

The Indian government plans to give 100,000 units to students. Subsequently, it aims to sell the tablet to students at US$35 next year. A retail version is expected to be available in Indian stores for US$60.
