The site reports it has confirmed that employee training is already in progress at some Verizon Wireless stores.

The Droid 4 will reportedly have Droid Razr styling and run on Verizon’s 4G LTE network, but like the previous Droids, it will feature a five-row, slide-out keyboard. It will also sport a four-inch touch screen, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, a front-facing camera for video chatting, and an 8MP back-facing camera.

There’s no indication in the materials which Android version it will run, but if Droid Life’s report is accurate, the new smartphone will launch the same day as Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus, the new flagship phone for Google’s Android 4.0, aka Ice Cream Sandwich.

A Motorola representative declined to comment, and Verizon representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The Facebook phone, thank you very much. Chatter about a Facebook branded phone that heavily integrates the company’s services into a handset has been around since at least 2009. But the most recent round of rumors has HTC as the manufacturing partner.

It doesn’t really matter, though. This is a sign of Facebook’s desperation over its business model as an IPO keeps drawing nearer. The company may not have the fiscal performance to justify the incredibly high valuations it has received. So it’s time to grasp at straws. Unfortunately for management, branding phones is one strategy that has proven time and time again to be robustly unsuccessful.

Wait a second — Facebook actually missed its revenue projections by $500 million

Just when you thought you were safe

The new Facebook phone reportedly has a codename already: Buffy. But the title shows that this is anything but a brand new idea. Buffy stands for the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Slayer is a condensed version of a previous project name: the “social layer.” (CBS MoneyWatch has a request in with Facebook for a statement. If and when one comes, the story will get an update.)

Originally, Facebook wanted to create a real phone of its own, including industrial design and carrier subsidies. That’s some ambition, especially when you consider it took Apple, which already mastered many parts of the consumer electronics business, years to come out with the iPhone.

Today’s version of the Facebook phone (or the rumor, anyway) is more like Slayer Lite. The company has scaled back, deciding on an Android-based phone with a heavy dose of HTML5 browser and application love. The idea would be to have social networking services (from Facebook, dare we guess?) integrated into the operations of the phone, rather than just tacked on.Read More…

The Galaxy Nexus will be available later this year,” the spokeswoman wrote. “Samsung/Google/Verizon Wireless are on track to launch the handset but we don’t yet have a firm date.”

The Android-based Galaxy Nexus has so far earned high marks from reviewers. In his review of the handset, CNET editor Kent German said that the “Samsung Galaxy Nexus is a big step forward for Android,” earning four stars out of a possible five. However, he did say that without Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich,” the smartphone is “just another Android device.”

Talk of the Galaxy Nexus launch cropped up yesterday when Business Insider claimedSamsung said it would be launching the smartphone in December. Technically, Samsung’s statement leaves open the possibility that it could launch next week–i.e., in November–though that seems pretty unlikely.

So, what do we now know about the Galaxy Nexus launch? Despite Business Insider’s claims, not much more than we did before. The Galaxy Nexus is coming to the U.S., it’ll be available to Verizon Wireless customers, and it should arrive on store shelves before the year is out. Samsung isn’t saying much more yet.

The rumor of a Facebook phone, or a smartphone with deeply integrated Facebook social-networking tools in it, first emerged a little more than a year ago. Back then, CNET had confirmed the social network had reached out to hardware manufacturers and carriers seeking input on a Facebook-branded phone. But rumors faded as devices with Facebook buttons were announced this year. Now it looks like Facebook may have revised its plans to build its own phone.

On Monday, the All ThingsD Web site reported that Facebook is working with cell phone maker HTC to build a smartphone with the Facebook social-networking technology built into the core of the device. The new phone is code-named “Buffy” after the television show about a vampire slayer. The phone will be based on a modified version of Android, which has been tweaked by Facebook so that its services are deeply integrated, All ThingsD reported, citing unnamed sources.

All ThingsD said that Facebook had also considered Samsung to make the device, but went with HTC instead. HTC has made at least two phones already with dedicated Facebook buttons. The Salsa and ChaCha, which have Facebook buttons, were introduced earlier this year. There are other phone manufacturers that have put Facebook buttons on their phones, including INQ Mobile and Motorola.

But according to All ThingsD, the “Buffy” Facebook phone will be different from these other others devices, because it won’t just provide access to Facebook. Instead, it will have the social networking technology developed by the company integrated into the device. Other platforms have done a bit of this already. For example, Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system has Facebook and Twitter integrated into the OS so that contacts are shared across multiple applications on the phone. And previously, Facebook has worked with Research in Motion to integrate Facebook into its BlackBerry devices. It also worked closely with Palm. Read More…

At this point, music lovers and listeners now have 10 scrillion ways to listen to music online. But where to start? Do you patiently upload all your music to Google Music? Do you check out what your friends are listening to on Spotify? Rdio? Mog? Pandora? Which ones are free, and which ones cost money? Or do you just forget about online music and just go back to listening to CDs (assuming they’ll even be around in a couple of years)?

Because there are so many ways to listen to music (remember live concerts?), if you have favorites not mentioned here, please share them in the comments. But for the purposes of this post, and for sanity’s sake, I’m going to try to flesh out which music services are right for different types of music listeners. Keep in mind that I’m not an audiophile; I’m just a regular music listener, like you probably are.

Also, note that I’m not addressing free radio services like Pandora, Last.fm, TuneIn Radio, Shoutcast, and the like. Many of these services are great, but they’re more about tapping into a preprogrammed stream; I’m talking about on-demand services that let you choose your own music.

Before you start
Before we present some of our favorite choices, a few words of advice:

Make sure your service of choice is available on your device(s): Listen to music on yourAndroid smartphone? iPhone? Apple TV? Roku? Sonos? Mac? Many of these services are supported on a wide variety of devices, but few of them are supported on every device. Before you pick one, make sure it works on your device of choice (via an app, software, or a browser).

Make sure your favorite artists are available on your service of choice:

Some notable artists–The Beatles, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Coldplay–are hard (or downright impossible) to find on some services. Search the archives to make sure your must-have artists are available–or be prepared to start ripping some CDs.

Don’t be afraid to experiment: Many of these services have free-to-try or free-on-PC versions. Giving them a spin is pretty much a no-risk affair. And even the pay services don’t come with contracts or early-termination fees, as a cell phone does. If you sign up for, say, Rhapsody and you end up not liking it after a month, cancel it–you won’t be out more than $10.

Music-streaming services

Music-streaming services are a great way to discover new music without actually taking space on your computer, or even buying the music outright. There are free ways to do this, as well as paid ways to do this.

Spotify
Spotify broke onto the scene in a big way in July 2011, when it was finally released in the U.S.

It offers tight integration with Facebook; songs I listen to in Spotify show up in real time on my Facebook Timeline (which can be a good or bad thing, depending on what embarrassing thing I happen to be listening to). In fact, when I open my Spotify desktop app, more than 50 of my Facebook friends are actively using it. By comparison, only seven of my Facebook friends are using Rdio, (which I’ll get to later), with only a couple actively using it. Read More…

The service takes advantage of Google search technology as well as its ability to tap the tastes of a user’s friends to recommend songs. With three of the four major record labels now participating in the service, users will also be able to buy music.
“Google Music is about artists and their music and new ways to connect them to their fans,” said Jamie Rosenberg, director of digital content for Google.

The beta version of Google Music, which debuted in May, didn’t include the ability to buy songs from labels. But users could upload their entire music libraries to Google’s servers, making those tunes available to stream from any browser or Android-based device, such as a phone, a tablet, or Google TV. Google will now open that service to anyone in the United States.

“The service will continue to be free,” Rosenberg said.

Users can upload up to 20,000 songs.

Google is also adding music to the Android store, where it already sells movie rentals and books. And the company has added a recommendations engine, using friend’s selections, to help make music discoverable.

And Google is integrating the service with its Google+ social network. Google+ friends can stream music from one another for an entire album, from start to finish, for free. They can only share a specific track with a friend once.

Google dubbed today’s event “These Go To Eleven” in an e-mail invitation sent to media and analysts. Of course, that’s a reference to the classic film mockumentary “This is Spinal Tap” and its lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel, who had an amplifier with volume knobs that went to 11. Read More…
